The153-IRBThermometerwasdesignedtomeasurecutaneoustemperatureofsmallrodentsveryfastandcontactless. Withthe153-IRBThermometer,weespeciallyfocusedontheopticaldimensionandthepositionoftheIRsensorinordertoallowmeasurementsonverysmallsurfaceswithoutallowingthesensortogetwrongvalueswithintegrationofenvironmenttemperature,whichcanbethecasewithotherindustrialtypeInfraredthermometers.Thisthermometerthusallowseasymeasurementsevenonmicetails-withhighaccuracyandrepeatABIlity.Thecutaneousmeasurementshouldbecorrelatedwithusualrectaltemperatures(seeourRET-2and3rectalprobesforrodents).

Infraredtemperaturemeasurementconsistsinthedetectionofthequantityoflightemittedbythemeasuredobject-theopticalsignalreceivedbythesensorbeingthenconvertedintoanelectricalsignal.Theinstrumentsareequippedwithalenstoconcentratethelightonthesensor.Thislenseshavedifferentcharacteristicsaccordingtotheobjectyouwanttomeasure(diameter,focallength,viewingangleordistancerationbetweenthesurface"seen"bythelensandthedistancetotheobject).
Anotherparametershouldbetakenintoaccount:theemissivity(oramountofemittedlight)ofthemeasuredobject.Thefocalspecificationsoftypicalgeneralthermometersusuallyallowthemeasurementofobjectsfromaminimumdistanceof10to25mmwithaminimumtargetsizeof15mmandadistanceratioof1:10,theemissivityisgenerallyfixedto0,95.Suchthermometersarethereforenotabletomeasurefromlessthan10mmfromtheobject,andthismeasurementincludesallpointsinacircleof15mmofdiameter.Iftheobjectissituated50cmaway,thesurfaceofmeasurementwillhaveadiameterof5cm.Thesesdimensionsarefullyinadequateforcoetaneoustemperaturemeasurementsinrodents...whichispreciselythereasonwhywedevelopedthe152-IRBThermometer.
